Who is a First Generation Student?

According to the Center for First Generation in College Students, a first-generation college student is defined as someone whose parents did not complete a four-year college or university degree, even if other family members have. The interpretation of this definition can vary from one institution to another, but it is the definition recognized at NFC and used as a qualifier for first-generation scholarships offered through the NFC Foundation.

While the focus of this definition is on earning a bachelor’s degree, we know that every step you take on this journey is worthy of celebration. Whether completing an associate of arts degree (AA), an associate of science degree (AS), a certificate, or a career and workforce program, these steps are more than academic milestones;  they are a testament to your hard work, your resilience, and your belief in what’s possible. Each class completed, each challenge overcome, and each degree earned is proof that you are transforming possibilities into reality and writing a new story for yourself, your family, and your future.

NFC students self-identify whether they are or are not a First Generation student when they first log-in to E-Banner.

Why It Matters

Your dreams are worth chasing and NFC is here to help. For First Generation college students who want to confidently strike out on your own, we offer resources just for you so that you can walk across the graduation stage with your head held high.

When you identify as First Gen, you are connected with resources and events, specifically the First to Stand ceremony where First Gen graduates are presented a medallion to be worn over your gown at graduation.
